Safety Glove Sizing Guide

Our Safety Glove Size Chart Makes it Easy to Find the Perfect Fit

Use Stauffer's Safety Glove Size Chart to combat the risk of poorly fitting gloves that fail to provide adequate protection and contribute to worker fatigue.

How to Measure Glove Size

To determine glove size, measure around the dominant hand with a soft cloth tape measure. If the gloves come in numbered sizes, the hand measurement in inches will correspond with the matching numerical glove size.

Hand Measurement to Glove Size:

  • If your hand measures 6.5 - 7 inches, choose size 7, XS.

  • If your hand measures 7.5 – 8 inches, choose size 8, Small.

  • If your hand measures 8.5 – 9 inches, choose size 9, Medium.

  • If your hand measures 9.5 – 10 inches, choose size 10, Large.

  • If your hand measures 10.5 – 11 inches, choose size 11, XL.

  • If your hand measures 11.5 – 12 inches, choose size 12, XXL.

Additionally, you can also determine glove size by measuring from the bottom of the palm to the tip of the middle finger.

Use the measurements in the safety glove size chart to determine which size is the best fit for you.

Why Are Proper Fitting Gloves Important?

Gloves are the most common form of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), which makes sense as hand injuries are the number two cause of work-related injury. According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, there are 110,000 hand injuries annually that result in lost time. Workers who experienced these hand injuries were either not wearing gloves or wearing inadequate gloves in size or type.

Gloves that do not fit properly do not provide enough protection, while properly fitted gloves can reduce fatigue. A glove that is the correct size will provide the highest level of dexterity while also protecting the worker. If a glove is too small, it can cause a worker’s hand to sweat, and the smaller size will reduce dexterity and movement. A glove that is too large will feel clumsy and restrict movement. Additionally, when a glove is improperly sized, hand muscles must work harder to make up for a glove that is too small or too large. The result? Increased fatigue and risk of injury.

Do Gloves Stretch?

It is important to remember that gloves ought to fit snugly at first, while still having the capacity to stretch and conform to the shape of the hand, within reasonable limits. However, there is no solution for excessively large gloves.

How Should Leather Gloves Fit?

There should not be excessive space around your fingers, but rather enough to clench your fist. If it feels slightly snug initially, there's no need to worry because leather tends to stretch somewhat with time, molding itself to your hand for a flawless fit.Â
